Nebraska is a state located on the Great Plains of the United States of America. Nebraska gets its name from a Chiwere word meaning "flat water," after the Platte River that flows through the state. Once considered part of the Great American Desert, it is now a leading farming state. Nebraskans have practiced scientific farming to turn the Nebraska prairie into a land of ranches and farms. Much of the history of the state is the story of the impact of the Nebraska farmer. Nebraskans are sometimes colloquially referred to as "Cornhuskers" (which is derived from the state nickname). The varied landscapes of Nebraska, with 3,000 lakes offer a wide range of leisure and recreational activities that include shooting, canoeing, fishing, swimming, riding, and skiing. The many cultural and historical opportunities in Nebraska include historic trails, riverboat excursions, nature centers, museums, and zoos. Nebraska was once called "The Great American Desert". |

The vast plains of Nebraska extend from the prairies in the east, rising up to meet the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the west. Small towns and farms are scattered about the expansive landscape. Omaha, the state's largest city and only riverfront community, sits on the west bank of the Missouri River. Now a prosperous commercial center, Omaha has a prairie outpost history. At the Durham Western Heritage Museum, a multi-media presentation and many artifacts depict the history of Omaha. Less than 60 miles southwest of Omaha is the state's capital, Lincoln. The State Capitol building towers over the rest of Lincoln's city center, standing slightly taller than 400 feet. The Historic Haymarket district, established in 1867, is filled with restaurants, shops and galleries. East Nebraska encompasses attractions such as the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneers in Grand Island and Crane Meadows in Wood River. In the Nebraska Sand Hills, travelers and locals alike enjoy NEBRASKAland Days each June in North Platte. Nebraska's beauty also rests in things not changed yet, far from the city's view. It offers the opportunity to look away from the pavement, the stoplights, the buildings, the car in front of you and think about the world, right here, before anyone touched it with modernization. Yet, its beauty rests in more than trees and prairie grass, more than rows of corn or fields of wheat.
